“I Just Paid Off My Mortgage”

“I Just Paid Off My Mortgage”

I did the mortgage for these clients a little over 7 years ago. At the time these folks had a very small mortgage that had 8 years left but $139,500 in short term obligations. They really didn’t want to refinance but the short term debts were killing them.

After much discussion we decided to do a new 15 year mortgage, pay off all their debts including the current mortgage. We ended up saving them $2200 per month. The goal was to pay down on their mortgage as much as they could each month until the home was paid off which was exactly what they did. Below is part of an email that she sent:

Joe, you may recall, we did a mortgage with you just over 7 years ago and wanted to let you know, I sent in our last mortgage payment this morning. As you know, we weren’t sure we could actually do it, but we did, with your help of course. The goal was for us was to retire in 2016, we can now do that. Thank you for your guidance.

Good morning Joe.  I retired in 2006, however I am not one just to become a couch potato.  I'll retire when I'm laid to rest, otherwise regardless I'll carry on. Having a good time, not in retirement.

Your the man Joe, saving this couple $2200 per month certainly helped them pay off their loan quickly. Something we might have to consider with our mortgage.

No one should be in a situation where they go into retirement with big debts.  You found them a way to be able to enjoy their retirement

Hi Joe Petrowsky retire? Wow, they are among the few who can.

Your solution (a fifteen year mortgage to pay off all the high interest rate debts) was the right one. Making the same or smaller monthly payment they "managed" to pay it off in half the time. Fantastic.

Joe, that makes so much sense! Mortgage rates are a great deal lower than consumer debt and the interest expense is not tax deductible - get rid of it!

Joe, those were some determined homeowners to pay it off in half the time needed, great job!

Joe I never like extending out a mortgage that is almost paid off but in this case it was the right thing to do, a $2,200 per month saving is a huge amount.

What a good feeling to pay off a mortgage. There is so much talk today about leveraging and borrowing at below 4% rates, but I still like a free and clear home!
