“Why Should I Use You as My Mortgage Broker?”

“Why Should I Use You as My Mortgage Broker?”

I got an call from a prospective client, explaining that she was referred to me and asked why she should use me as her mortgage broker, compared to the person that she has used for years. I happen to know the person that she has been using and like him, he’s a really good person.

I told her that I would not make a change and told her, that I know the person and like him. Then she told me, that her real estate agent recommended me and so did the seller of the property that they are interested in. I told her I appreciated hear that these folks had referred me, but it doesn’t matter, she has had a good experience in the past, definitely go back again.

She told me that this conversation is not what she expected and thanked me. It wasn’t 30 minutes later that I got a call from my competitor to thank me for how I handled the conversation. He got off the phone saying, I owe you one my friend. Life is good!

How would you have handled the situation?

Good morning Joe. You are a mensch and that is very special. I like to think I would have done the same thing.

That is excellent, Joe. I would have asked just like she did if she was happy with the service she had received then tell her to honor that by going back. You will be repaid many times over.

Joe, I hear this from other mortgage brokers when my client asks that she wants to stay local & the mortgage person says similar nice things of that lender...it is the fair & best way to handle it as long as it is true!

Hello Joe - knowing you, I wouldn't have expected anything other than the way you handled the call. I would do the same.

Now, it would have been more difficult had the other broker been marginal.

Joe Petrowsky I probably don't know the other guy, so I would have helped her. It's a dog eat dog world, isn't it?

Actuallly, you need the right thing for many reasons. Good for you.

And he does 'owe you one."

Joe, I cannot imagine handling it any other way. You clearly did the right thing. No reason to throw anyone under the bus and take business away from (1) someone you know, like and trust and (2) who did not deserve to have lost business because you are so highly recommended.  I just wonder if that person would have done the same.

Joe I have done the same thing in the past.  Talking down the competition only makes us look bad, especially if the competitor is a good LO as well.  When we do the right thing it comes back more than what we gave.

Joe- I would hope that we all would have handled it as professionally as you did.  This attitude wins more referrals than saying something negative about someone.

Joe you expanded your sphere of influence today  . . . . with your act of professionalism.

Good luck and success.

I haven't run across this situation yet, Joe.  Though, I certainly hope that I would handle it the same way as you.
