“Overhearing Two People Talking About Buying Their First Home”
Yesterday, I stopped at a Dunkin Donuts for a hot chocolate. Rather than hop back in my car, I decided to sit for a few minutes.
I couldn't help myself, but I learned a bunch from the two people talking about buying their first home. Even though I did introduce myself and gave them business cards, I never got their names. For this purpose I will call them First and Second.
This was part of the conversation:
First - "We’re sick of paying rent."
Second - "Why don’t you guys just buy a house like we are going to do."
First - "We’re afraid, what if the values continue to drop."
Second said something amazing - "So what. Are you buying a home to live in or how much it might bring when you sell it? We have looked online and think it will cost less to own, than to rent."

At that point, I apologized to them, telling them, that I couldn’t help but overhear their conversation. I told them that I did mortgages for many first time home buyers. Would they mind if I asked them a couple of questions. After a moment’s hesitation, they said sure.
I asked First, "You said you were afraid to buy. Why?"
Their response was, "It’s all over the news, people are losing their homes and values of homes keep going down."
Isn’t that the truth, the media is scaring so many people away from buying a home!
I asked Second, "You have decided to buy now anyway, why?"
She said, "My husband and I are sick of renting. My parents have been bugging us for a couple of years, that we should buy a home. The prices look good and there seems to be a lot available, so we’re going for it."
I didn’t feel it was appropriate for me to take down any information but gave them each a card and asked them to read the back, which shares my value proposition:

I mentioned to them that I could get them preapproved for a mortgage to buy their first home which also because a learning experience since neither of which knew what that meant. Second said, she lived in MA and my card indicated I was licensed there as well.
Who knows if anything will come of it, but I learned a bunch from them. The media keeps hurting the recovery. Many people, especially first time home buyers, are afraid to buy.
*We need to make sure each and every person knows, they don’t have to be afraid to buy a home.*
